To
promote networking opportunities between
geriatrics nurses in SOHN
HISTORY
The Pediatric
Special Interest Group held its first meeting
in April 1987 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado
Springs. The group was founded by two SOHN
members; Linda Miller Calandra of Children's
Hospital in Philadelphia and Cindi Fitton
of Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. The
purpose of the first meeting was to allow
networking among the nurses who worked in
pediatric otolaryngology practices. Because
this meeting took place in conjunction with
the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology
(ASPO) the nurses were able to attend many
interesting educational and research presentations
provided by ASPO. The nursing meeting was
held in a roundtable format and discussions
about various topics ensured. The highlight
of all was meeting other nurses from around
the country who would be available for clinical
consultation. Many of these nurses are still
in contact with each other today.
THE
PRESENT PEDIATRIC SIG
Since
1987, the pediatric SIG has met every spring
in conjunction with ASPO. The format of this
meeting has changed from a small roundtable
group to a lecture format featuring physician
and nurse speakers focusing on pediatric otolaryngology
topics of interest. Although we have grown
in numbers our meeting still has the same
flavor of the original group, with networking
amongst the participants remaining the highlight
of the meeting. In recent years, this meeting
has added a day of Adult ORL education as
well as the awarding and presentation of the
Lois Moore Rogers Lectureship.
During
the National Congress in September, the Peds
SIG meets together for one session. During
this session the SIG leaders provide a forum
for networking with colleagues from across
the country. These nurses exchange business
cards, email address and phone numbers while
they discuss various issues related to pediatric
otolaryngology. The nurses who attend this
meeting also suggest pediatric topics and
speakers for future SOHN educational offerings.
The pediatric
SIG is a very committed and energetic group
of pediatric-focused nurses. This group is
proud to have spawned many SOHN leaders including
our current SOHN national president, Linda
Miller Calandra.
THE
LOIS MOORE-ROGERS LECTURESHIP
Dr. Gerald
Healey and the department of Otolaryngology
at The Children's Hospital Medical Center
in Boston established the Lois Moore-Rogers
Lectureship in 1996. Dr. Healy established
this award to honor Lois who worked in Pediatric
Otolaryngology for 18 years. Lois has been
a long time member of SOHN and active in the
Pediatric Special Interest Group. During her
years of practice, Lois concentrated on integrating
the family unit when providing patient care.
She was also very interested in patient and
family education. Lois, in conjunction with
SOHN, hopes the annual recipient of this award
demonstrates innovation in ideas and comprehensiveness
by including growth and development issues
that impact on the family unit. If you would
like more information regarding this lectureship,
please contact SOHN national headquarters.
Any
one is welcome to attend any of the special
interest groups. There is always someone who
has experienced something similar and can
offer assistance, sometimes solutions, and
sometimes just someone to listen and care.
