Indications for a Surgical Airway Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy and Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy Tubes will identify the reasons for surgical airway interventions, anatomy, physiology, mucociliary transport of the airway and the anticipated outcomes that a surgical airway revision will incur. The differences between tracheostomy and laryngectomy will be illustrated. The second portion of this module will provide a review of the types of tracheostomy tubes most frequently used in the United States. The laryngectomy tubes and devices normally used in the U.S. will also be highlighted.
- Module 2 – Speech and Swallowing with a Tracheostomy/Laryngectomy
This module will introduce information highlighting communication challenges faced by individuals with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy and provide alternate methods of communication for tracheostomy and laryngectomy patients, including prosthetics and assistive communication devices. The impact of surgical airways on the body’s ability to humidify inspired air will be reviewed, along with strategies to optimize airway humidification. This course will review normal swallowing mechanics and explore the impact of tracheostomy on swallowing function and discuss potential strategies for managing this challenge.
- Module 3 – Tracheostomy Complications
The Tracheostomy Complications module covers the possible complications that may occur, a delineation of the complications as immediate, intermediate or late, how to anticipate possible complications, and ways to avert or manage those complications.
- Module 4 – Tracheostomy/Laryngectomy Patient & Family Education

Chronic Cough
1 CE Hour
Chronic cough—defined as a cough lasting longer than eight weeks—affects 10–12% of the population, with a higher prevalence in females and peak onset in the sixth decade of life. This course is designed to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and clinical reasoning skills needed to effectively evaluate and manage patients presenting with chronic cough.
Participants will learn to distinguish between the three most common causes of chronic cough: Upper Airway Cough Syndrome (UACS), Asthma, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The course will cover diagnostic criteria, evidence-based treatment strategies, and patient-centered management plans tailored to each etiology. Through interactive case studies, learners will apply medical knowledge to real-world scenarios and enhance their clinical decision-making skills.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Accurately identify the underlying cause of chronic cough.
- Select appropriate, evidence-based treatment strategies for each condition.
- Integrate clinical knowledge into the management of chronic cough using case-based learning.
This course is ideal for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, primary care providers, and specialists in otolaryngology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology.
